FrimpongA significant number of drivers involved in road carnages in the country lack basic understanding of mathematics, renowned law lecturer, Prof Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu has said.
The learned lawyer’s words come on the back of a gory accident on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway on Monday, March 9.
Commenting on the horrific incident which claimed some 31 lives, the Law Professor attributed the cause of such accidents to poor decision making by drivers especially those driving commercial vehicles.
The deceased were burnt beyond recognition when the Sprinter and Yutong buses they were travelling in collided and caught fire in the early hours of Monday.
Even though she believes several factors could have accounted for this accident and many others recorded in the country, Prof Mensa-Bonsu opines that the understanding of mathematics is a key factor in these accidents.
“Drivers are making bad decisions on the roads and as a teacher, I’ve taken interest in checking which of the drivers have a good sense of mathematics. In overtaking [for example] you can tell it is poor calculation. We may not think of these things but in truth, some of the poor decisions are based on a poor sense of calculation,” the academic told Accra based Joy FM.
The Law Professor who was part of the Emile Short Commission which probed the Ayawaso West by-election violence also entreated drivers to be careful when overtaking vehicles and whether it was safe to do so.
