Diella TekuThe National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) delay in declaring the results of Saturday’s general elections, warning that the delay is exacerbating tensions and sparking pockets of unrest across the country.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, December 8, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, widely known as “General Mosquito,” urged the EC to expedite the process to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The delay has reportedly fueled frustration, particularly among NDC supporters, who are demanding transparency and prompt action from the electoral body. Asiedu Nketia stressed that both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have independently completed their collation of results, intensifying questions about why the EC has not yet declared the official outcomes.
“The two key players, NPP and NDC, have produced their results, yet the EC is dragging its feet. This delay is creating a vacuum that breeds anxiety, misinformation, and unrest. The youth, in particular, are reacting to the uncertainty, and this is a dangerous sign,” he cautioned.
The NDC’s call for urgency follows reports of isolated incidents of violence and unrest linked to the perceived delay. Asiedu Nketia reiterated that timely action from the EC is critical to maintaining peace and order.
“Our agents remain stationed across the country, waiting for the official results. The only way to ensure peace is for the EC to announce the results promptly,” he emphasized.
The party also appealed to supporters to remain calm and exercise restraint while awaiting the EC’s announcement. Meanwhile, observers are urging the electoral body to enhance communication with the public to mitigate growing anxiety and reinforce trust in the process.
As the nation waits, all eyes are on the EC to deliver the much-anticipated results and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
