Diella TekuThe New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ghana Police Service to step up efforts to maintain law and order at collation centres nationwide amid reports of rising tensions and disruptions during the electoral process.
Addressing the media in Accra on Sunday, Justin Frimpong Kodua, the NPP General Secretary, highlighted incidents of unrest at several collation centres and called for immediate intervention by security agencies to ensure the smooth collation of election results.
“The NPP has, with great concern, noted the violent conduct of NDC thugs at collation centres in constituencies such as Damongo, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, Aowin, Obuasi East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, Ahafo Ano South West, Akwatia, Trobu, and Tema Central,” he said.
Kodua accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of resorting to intimidation and violence in areas where the NPP believes it has secured victories in the parliamentary elections. He alleged that the NDC was pressuring the Electoral Commission (EC) to manipulate results in their favor.
“We vehemently condemn these attacks and serve notice that we shall resist every attempt to tamper with the results in these constituencies,” he declared.
Kodua also appealed to the IGP to deploy additional personnel to critical areas and intensify patrols to prevent further disruptions. He stressed that protecting the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of citizens should be a top priority.
“The rights and safety of all citizens must be upheld. We must not allow illegal looting or intimidation, and I call on the leadership of the NDC to restrain their supporters and condemn these unnecessary acts of violence,” he urged.
The NPP leader further called on all political parties and their supporters to respect the rule of law and cooperate with security agencies. He emphasized the importance of fostering a peaceful environment to safeguard the democratic process.
As the collation of results continues, the NPP reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness while cautioning against actions that could undermine the process. The party reaffirmed its readiness to defend its victories through lawful means.
