NPP MP Carlos Ahenkorah runs away from e-levy comment.

Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah has denied media reports that he has said that the proposed 1.75% e-levy by the government is not a compulsory tax, thus Ghanaians are opposed to it should not engage in electronic transactions.

The former Deputy Minister of Trade during an interview yesterday stated that “It is not a compulsory tax, if you don’t do MoMo, you don’t pay. So if you don’t want to pay, don’t do MoMo. It’s simple”.

That part of his response from the minutes-long interview has generated controversy, but the legislator says he has been taken out of context and the media have deliberately headlined a skewed representation of his thought, just to court disaffection for him and the NPP government.

According to the legislator who spoke in an interview with Okay FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com this morning, the E-levy must be welcomed by all well-meaning Ghanaians who want to witness massive developments funded by the people’s own taxes and not through loans, which have almost always proven counter-productive.

He said the agitations against the proposal by the Minority and parliament and groups like the Bernard Mornah-led so-called “Justice for Ghana” do not augur well for the progress of the country.

In his view, the protesters should rather help the government with laudable ideas instead of opposing the 1.75% e-levy.

He has therefore called out all members of the NPP to rise up to defend the cause of the government and not to be cowered by the discordant voices of the opposition.
