A Ghanaian MP has died after he was shot in a “horrific” assault in his constituency, Dailymailgh.com can report.
Ekow Quansah Hayford, NPP MP for Mfantseman in the Central Region, was left bleeding on the ground after the attack on the Abeadze Dominase – Abeadzi Duadzi – Mankessim road, media reports say.
He was reportedly attacked while returning from a campaign trip, Mankessim-based Coastal FM reported.
One eyewitness and survivor told Dailymailgh.com that they heard his attacker shout “stop stop” at least twice beforehand.
“The unmasked attackers asked us to lie down; some of us run to the bush, the eyewitness narrated. The gunmen immediately shot at the MP who was in his Land Cruiser at the time.
“And so after they had left we got closer to the MP who was groaning in pain as he asked for water. He was not responding to my calls when I returned with the drink”, the witness recounted.
No official statement has since been released by the police in the Central Region confirming an arrest.
The Ghanaian politician is a member of the seventh parliament and also a member of the Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of the Interior and Defence Committee.
He died at aged 50.
