The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken decisive action in the Yendi constituency, suspending 184 members for violating the party’s constitution. The move, effective December 26, 2024, follows allegations of misconduct during the December 7, 2024, presidential and parliamentary elections.

The decision was reached unanimously during an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting held on December 23, 2024. The meeting, attended by key stakeholders including Constituency Executives, the Council of Elders, the Council of Patrons, and members of the Disciplinary Committee, deliberated on complaints lodged against the affected members.

Alhaji Baba Gazali, Chairman of the NPP in Yendi, announced the suspensions and informed the National and Regional leadership as well as the general public. The complaints against the members included:

  • Standing as independent candidates against the party’s officially elected parliamentary candidate.
  • Declaring support for other political parties or candidates.
  • Supporting an independent candidate during the elections.
  • Party officials refusing to campaign or work for the NPP during the elections.

These actions, the party stated, contravened specific provisions of its constitution, which stipulate automatic forfeiture of membership for those who stand as independent candidates or openly support rival parties.

In line with the party’s constitutional provisions, the leadership has suspended the members pending further inquiries by the Disciplinary Committee. Members found guilty of misconduct could face expulsion.

The NPP emphasized that these suspensions are necessary to preserve discipline and unity within the party as it seeks to rebuild trust and strengthen its structure following the electoral challenges.

The NPP has reiterated the importance of adhering to its constitution and safeguarding party cohesion during this critical period. Alhaji Baba Gazali called on members to remain committed to the party’s principles and work collectively to address the aftermath of the elections.

As the party moves forward, it is expected to focus on restoring internal harmony while addressing grievances that may have led to the alleged misconduct. The Yendi suspensions highlight the NPP’s resolve to enforce discipline and maintain its integrity as it navigates the complexities of Ghana’s political landscape.
