The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo has apologized to the youth of Ghana for the insensitive decision of the erstwhile Mahama led Government to cancel the monthly allowance payment to Teacher and Nursing Trainees in 2014/2015.
Speaking at a Youth Debate on Asempa Fm’s Ekosiisen program, the NDC youth leader stated that the decision to cancel the payment of trainees allowance was unpopular and went ahead to apologize to the youth, particularly training nurses and teachers.
Opare Addo was forced to admit that the Mahama government was callous and apologize forthwith after the National Youth Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Henry Nana Boakye aka Nana B exposed the inconsistencies in the position of Mr. Mahama on the payment of the allowance prior to the 2016 elections and in the lead up to the 2020 elections, and made a very strong argument to the effect that Mr. Mahama is simply engaging in deceptive politicking.
“In 2016, Mr. Mahama sworn heaven and earth that he will never restore the trainee allowance even if it will cause him the elections. It is therefore strange and unfathomable that someone who said there is no sense in paying trainees allowance would make a U-turn, after President Akufo-Addo had restored the allowance, to say that he will continue with the payment of same. This is clearly deceptive politics that has assumed a fearsome crescendo” Nana B added.
It appears there is acute confusion in the NDC party over the trainees allowance issues. Opare Addo’s apology comes at the back of a spirited defense mounted by the NDC running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman for the decision to cancel the payment of trainees allowance. According to her, the NDC never canceled trainees allowance but rather replaced it with students loan.
It is therefore surprising that Opare Addo will admit that they canceled trainees allowance and apologize for that when their running mate has, a few days ago, denied that they canceled it and went further to justify the supposed replacement.
