Diella TekuThe Ghana Police Service is focusing its investigation on the issue of underage driving after a tragic accident in East Legon claimed two lives on Saturday, 12th October 2024. The accident involved 16-year-old Elrad Salifu Amoako, whose parents, Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako and Mouha Amoako, have been arrested as part of the inquiry.
Elrad was driving a Jaguar SUV (GN 7801-20) when it collided with a 4×4 Acura vehicle (GR 2542-23) driven by Joseph Ackah, resulting in a fatal crash that claimed two lives. Both vehicles burst into flames upon impact and were burned beyond recognition.
While the investigation into the exact cause of the accident is ongoing, the police are particularly concerned about how Elrad, a minor, came to be behind the wheel of such a powerful vehicle. Bishop Elisha and his wife are currently assisting authorities with this aspect of the investigation, as the severity of the incident has raised questions about potential negligence.
A police spokesperson confirmed that, “The parents of the 16-year-old suspect driver, Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako and Mouha Amoako, are currently in custody, assisting the investigation.”
In the aftermath of the accident, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, led a team from the Police Management Board to visit the families affected by the tragedy. They extended their condolences to the bereaved and checked on the injured at the hospital.
The police have assured the public of a thorough investigation, stating, “We are committed to bringing closure to the affected family as we continue to offer our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
