The Ashanti regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has challenged Mr. John Mahama to answer questions over the £100K shopping spree his wife engaged in when he was President.
According to Mr. Bernard Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, a shop owner in the UK had to call in the Police because Lordina Mahama had stormed his shop and spent £30,000 an equivalent of GHC 245,891.70 on a designer handbag.
She didn’t end there but spent a total of £100K (GHC 819,639) in the store which raised eyebrows, Chairman Wontumi revealed.
The Police according to Chairman Wontumi were called in and upon interrogation, they got to know she was the first lady of Ghana.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has waded into controversies surrounding the payment of salaries for the wives of the President and Vice President.
In an article on his Facebook page, he described as ‘problematic’ “an attempt to sneak the First and Second Ladies into the article 71 office holders’ group”
According to him, the challenge is that the spouses of the President and Vice President are not captured among Article 71 Office Holders and, therefore, there is no legal or constitutional basis for it.
But in an interview with Wontumionline.com, Chairman Wontumi called on former President Mahama to explain to Ghanaians how his wife wasted such an amount of shopping if she wasn’t getting any form of salary or allowance from the state.
He opined that the spouses of Presidents and Vice Presidents play a vital role for Ghana and it wouldn’t be out of place to place them salary because they deserve it.
He therefore warned Mr. Mahama to stop the double standards and rather offer to enlighten others who are not privy about the role Presidential spouses play in developing the country.
