The Central Regional Police Command says it has begun processes to invite Minister for Special Development Initiative, Mavis Hawa Koomson for questioning after she admitted firing gunshots at a registration centre in Kasoa.
Four persons have been arrested in connection with the violence that occurred at the Step to Christ registration centre in Kasoa Peace Town in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region.
The scuffle was triggered by accusations by some members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) that their counterparts in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were busing people to register and vote at Kasoa.
The incident which occurred in the early hours of Monday saw gunshots being fired and motorbikes being set ablaze which temporarily halted the registration exercise.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Adom FM, Madam Hawa Koomson who is the MP for the area, admitted to firing the gunshots during the altercation.
“I can’t sit and watch someone who is not from the constituency come in and register and vote for residents of Kasoa. So I went to the polling centre with my men, none of them had a weapon, I am the one who gave the warning shot,” she said.
This development has left the police with no option than to invite her for questioning.
Speaking in an interview monitored by ABC News, the Public Relations Officer of the Central Regional Police Command, DSP Irene Oppong, said due to Hawa Koomson’s position as a lawmaker, the police will be seeking the express permission of the Speaker of Parliament for her to submit herself for questioning.
“Four people have been arrested, we have their case dockets, the regional CID is investigating and if everything goes as planned, we will arraign them before court tomorrow. This morning a complaint came that in Kasoa Peace town, Top hill, there is a polling centre where some men have fired gunshots and set some motorbikes ablaze so we went and arrested 4 people and we have the pistol in our custody.”
“When you are inviting someone from parliament, using the criminal procedure and the police service instructions, you don’t invite the Parliamentarian directly but there is a channel in parliament used where you inform the speaker and the speaker will inform the individual to present herself to the police so we will follow that procedure,” she indicated.
She assured residents of Kasoa to remain calm and confident in the police since reinforcement has been deployed to the area.
