Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang Promises Agriculture Revitalization, Blasts Current Government’s Failures

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the vice presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to overhaul Ghana’s agriculture sector if the party wins the upcoming elections. Speaking to a crowd of enthusiastic supporters in Walewale during her tour of the North East Region on Wednesday, Opoku-Agyemang outlined plans to transform the sector into a more attractive and sustainable source of employment and food security for the country.

She emphasized that an NDC government would invest heavily in agriculture and introduce progressive policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of farmers. One of the core initiatives, she explained, would be the creation of Farmers Service Centres in every district to provide modern farming equipment, such as tractors, to help farmers enhance productivity.

“The establishment of these Centres will make a huge difference. Farmers will have access to essential machinery that will enable them to cultivate their lands more efficiently, leading to an increase in food production,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stated.

She also took the opportunity to criticize the current Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government for its inaction on key agricultural infrastructure projects, particularly the Pwalugu Dam. Despite the government having already cut the sod for its construction and spent millions of dollars, the project remains unfinished, she lamented.

Turning her focus to the broader national landscape, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed dismay over what she described as the government’s failure to effectively manage critical sectors, including education. She criticized the administration for opting to buy past exam questions for students instead of ensuring they have access to essential learning materials, such as textbooks.

“The government has failed the people of Ghana,” she declared. “It has destroyed our economy, neglected critical infrastructure, and left our education system in shambles. The time has come for a change. On December 7, the people will speak, and it will be time to boot this government out of office.”

As the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections approach, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s remarks serve as a strong call for action and accountability, with a clear message that the NDC is ready to steer Ghana toward a better future through strategic investments in agriculture and reform across all sectors.
