adminThe Minority on Parliament’s Assurances Committee is asking the education minister, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum to resign or be fired from office.
The call follows the minister’s inability to supply the full complement of textbooks to basic schools four years since the introduction of the new curriculum.
Schools are yet to be supplied with the right quantities of textbooks, a situation that has resulted in pairing two pupils with a book in some schools.
Speaking to Accra-based Joy Fm on the situation, ranking member on the Assurances Committee, John Oti Bless said the minister should do the honorable thing by stepping down for failing to deliver on his promise.
“When you go to Kenya as at two years ago, three ministers were fired for failing to deliver on their mandate”, hence the minister should “resign or be fired” as well.
President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Dr Isaac Owusu stated that only five out of the eight approved textbooks have been supplied to the schools.
He urged the government to as a matter of importance procure the necessary approved books.
“As I speak to you since 2019 the schools are with five textbooks out of the eight subjects that the children are doing at the primary level.”
Meanwhile president of the Ghana Publishers Association, Asare Konadu Yamoah said government has procured less than 50% of the textbooks, adding, the government has not honored its payment for the past four years.
However, the public relations officer at the education ministry, Kwasi Kwarteng in response blamed the inadequate textbooks at some basic schools on distribution challenge which he said the ministry will work to resolve.
