Rihanna’s most scandalous red carpet dress.

Rihanna paid homage to Pope Francis last night in a stunning Maison Margiela gown, replete with a papal tiara evocative of those used by Popes from the Middle Ages through the 1960s.

Rihanna wore a strapless white mini-dress adorned with pearls and a matching, floor-grazing cloak in a papal-inspired ensemble. A rosary-like necklace, hoop earrings, and Louboutin shoes with pearl ankle straps were among the accessories.

Of course, Rihanna completed her stunning appearance with a Fenty Beauty smoky eye and drastically bleached brows. The bad girl’s avant-garde Maison Margiela ensemble was a wonderful match for the evening’s theme.

While she is notorious for being one of the last to arrive, Rihanna, along with Kris Jenner, Katharine McPhee, Amanda Seyfried, and others, came rather early this year.

Rihanna, who was co-hosting the Met Gala alongside Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, and Amal Clooney, had more motivation than most to elevate the red carpet standard this year.

The singer teased her outfit for the big night on Instagram earlier in the day to get fans psyched. “Me and squad pullin’ up,” she captioned a photo of a van with the words “ladies college” on it. She also posted a photo of two women in a black SUV snapping selfies with their iPhones.

Rihanna’s unrivaled mastery of the art of Met Gala dressing has long been admired by both the industry and the Internet; Vogue editor André Leon Talley dubbed her regal yellow (and undeniably meme-worthy) Guo Pei cape from the 2015 gala “the best Met Gala red carpet dress of all time,” and it appears that Ri will be keeping her crown as the ultimate Met Gala attendee with tonight’s look.

In an interview on the red carpet, Rihanna commented, “It feels expensive; it’s heavy. It’s designed by John Galliano and we’ve had a few different fittings; we’ve had a few colours. They beaded this by hand… It would be a sin not to wear it.”

The Met Gala is more than simply a chance for celebrities to show up in extravagant outfits: all revenues benefit the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. If you’re wondering how much it costs to attend, a single ticket costs $30,000. But it’s a drop in the ocean when compared to Rihanna’s expensive style.
