Diella TekuEight lives were tragically lost in a severe collision on the Sunyani-Berekum highway Saturday afternoon. The accident, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. near Amanfoso, involved a Toyota Corolla taxi and a private vehicle owned by Great Wall School, claiming the lives of five men and three women, many of whom were mourners.
According to reports, the taxi with registration AS 4819-17 was carrying four passengers traveling from Sunyani toward Berekum. Meanwhile, a private vehicle with registration GN 5753-12, also carrying four mourners, was en route from Dormaa-Ahenkro to Sunyani. The collision reportedly happened when the driver of the private vehicle lost control of the steering, veered into the taxi’s lane, and caused the tragic impact.
Emergency responders rushed the victims to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital and the Sunyani Teaching Hospital for urgent care. However, the severe impact left eight of the ten occupants dead, with medical staff confirming that the injuries sustained were fatal.
Gabriel Kwame Okyere, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), detailed the crash’s severity, explaining that the taxi had collided with the passenger side of the private vehicle. According to Mr. Okyere, the casualties included seven individuals—three men and four women—who were brought to Sunyani Teaching Hospital, where Dr. Kofi Kusi Philemon confirmed them deceased upon arrival. One of the remaining three victims, treated at Berekum Holy Family Hospital, later died while under care.
The NRSA has since taken custody of both vehicles for investigation, and the bodies of the victims have been placed in hospital mortuaries for identification and autopsy.
