Diella TekuA major fire broke out Monday night at a furniture warehouse on Accra’s bustling Spintex Road, causing massive destruction but, thanks to a swift and coordinated response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), preventing further spread to nearby businesses.
The blaze began around 9 p.m., sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky as flames rapidly consumed the warehouse, which was filled with highly flammable materials, including foam and upholstery products. Recognizing the fire’s intensity, the Kasapreko Command, the first GNFS team to arrive, quickly requested reinforcements, and units from the GNFS Headquarters, Trade Fair, University of Ghana, and Abelemkpe stations joined the battle within minutes.
GNFS spokesperson Alex King Nartey, who provided updates via a Facebook livestream, detailed the unique challenges posed by the materials inside the warehouse, which intensified the blaze and complicated firefighting efforts. Firefighters deployed foam concentrate, a specialized agent designed to tackle flammable substances, to contain the blaze effectively. Nartey commended the GNFS teams for their rapid coordination, explaining, “Our crew from Kasapreko arrived and immediately realized the scale of the incident, calling for backup to prevent the fire from spreading.”
The coordinated GNFS response successfully confined the fire, shielding neighboring warehouses and averting what could have been a catastrophic spread in the densely packed commercial district. As firefighters worked tirelessly for nearly three hours, the warehouse’s structural damage grew extensive, but nearby properties remained unharmed.
The combined efforts led to the fire’s containment by 11:30 p.m., marking the end of an intense operation and sparing the commercial hub from further destruction. GNFS teams are now conducting investigations to determine the fire’s cause, with preliminary assessments suggesting the fire’s origin may have involved the warehouse’s stored flammable materials.
