In a tragic escalation of violence, eight travelers lost their lives after gunmen ambushed the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Gbimsi, close to Walewale, setting up deadly roadblocks. The attackers, who erected barriers in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town on Sunday, halted vehicles and interrogated passengers in an effort to identify targets. The assailants set two vehicles ablaze, creating a chaotic scene that left survivors and witnesses deeply shaken.
One survivor, recounting the horrifying experience, shared, “I was traveling from Sunyani to Paga when we encountered the roadblocks near Walewale. People were forcibly stopping cars and selecting individuals to kill. The ordeal lasted over an hour, and there was no response from security forces.” This deadly attack is suspected to stem from the ongoing Bawku conflict, which has recently reignited after a period of relative calm.
In response, the Ghana Police Service has pledged a bolstered security presence along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to protect travelers and prevent further attacks. The police, working closely with military forces, have also deployed additional patrols in Bawku and surrounding areas to address the growing security threat.
“We are committed to maintaining peace, security, law, and order in Bawku and its environs,” the Ghana Police Service affirmed in a statement, adding that joint Police and Military forces are now stationed along the affected highway to ensure traveler safety and maintain control over the region’s volatile security situation.
