FrimpongThe latest twist gathered by Adwoaadubianews.com suggest that it has been pushed forward following a meeting between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council and the Premier League clubs.
The meeting held at the M Plaza Hotel in Accra gave stakeholders of the game the opportunity to discuss critical issues concerning the GPL, as well as the Club Licensing.
They have now arrived on the last weekend of the month of December. So from Friday 27th -29th of December will see the return of the league.
The latest development means that, the Ghana Premier League, Division One League, and the Women’s League will all take off on the same weekend.
Now, the other important matters discussed by the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association in collaboration with the Premier League and Division One League clubs was to adopt the playing of penalty kicks in league matches that will end in a draw.
The recent penalty woes facing the various national teams and clubs in the tournaments has led to the Ghana Football Association embarking on this project to find solutions to the problem that has caused the country and clubs titles and qualification.
Ghana has suffered defeats in four major tournaments through penalty shoot-outs in 2019.
The Black Stars exited the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations through penalties after losing to Tunisia in the Round of 16.
The Black Stars B also failed to retain the WAFU Cup after losing on penalties to Senegal in the final.
In the just-ended U-23 AFCON, the Black Meteors failed on two occasions to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games after losing on penalties.
The football season is expected to conclude in July 2020, per the GFA notice.
It will be recalled that the 2017/2018 Ghana Premier League season was cut short in June last year following Ana’s exposè entitled ‘Number 12’ a bribery and match fixing scandal that shook the core of Ghana football.
The 2019/2020 Ghana Premier League season will feature 18 teams after the GFA Extraordinary Congress increased the number of teams from 16 last month. With the image of the game battered it will take the intervention of government to revive the league.
According to reports the league is set to be sponsored by Ghana Gas and Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC) through an intervention by government to ensure the league starts in December.
The government would want the quick bounce back of the Ghana league as the country heads into an election year.
According to our source, the return of the Ghana league will help ease pressure on the government as football also dominates the media landscape.
With the image of Ghana football battered by last year’s documentary by Anas Amereyaw Anas, government is the only body to ready to invest into Ghana football as corporate Ghana are not ready at this moment.
Government sponsored the Normalisation Committee Special Competitions and are ready to sonspor the new Ghana league season.
Ghana FA President Kurt Okraku in his first meeting with the leader of government Nana Akufo-Addo called for support for his administration which government obliged.
