As Ghana gears up for its December 7 General Election, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made it clear that he will only recognize the election results if the process is deemed transparent and credible.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with the BBC, Mahama raised concerns about potential irregularities and violence that could compromise the electoral process. He underscored that his acceptance of the outcome hinges on adherence to democratic principles and the integrity of the election.

Highlighting his apprehensions, Mahama said: “If on the election day, there is widespread ballot snatching, beating of people, and the military moving in and intimidating people, and thugs are all over the place, rampaging the place, you want me to accept that result? It will depend on the transparency and the fairness of the process.”

The former president emphasized that a peaceful and fair election is not only critical for the credibility of the results but also for the stability of Ghana’s democracy. He called on the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure a process free from intimidation, violence, and manipulation.

Mahama’s comments come at a crucial time as political tensions rise in the lead-up to the polls. The Electoral Commission has been under scrutiny, with opposition parties and civil society groups urging greater transparency and accountability.

The NDC leader’s insistence on a credible process echoes broader concerns about safeguarding Ghana’s electoral integrity. His statements serve as a reminder of the need for all parties to prioritize democratic values and work towards a peaceful election.

As the election date approaches, Mahama’s stance is likely to resonate with many Ghanaians who seek assurance that their votes will count in a free and fair manner.
