Diella TekuThe University of Ghana has successfully regained full control of its Botanical Gardens after resolving a long-standing contractual dispute with Mulch Company Limited, formerly known as Pine Springs Company Limited. This significant legal victory marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Gardens, as the University plans to revitalize the cherished green space to align with its sustainability and educational goals.
The dispute, which originated from a 2009 agreement where Mulch Company Limited was tasked with renovating and managing the Gardens, dragged on for years due to the company’s failure to meet its obligations. The legal process, which ultimately favored the University, resulted in Mulch Company agreeing to vacate the premises by November 30, 2024.
With the Gardens back under University management, plans are already underway for repairs and renovations that will restore it to its full potential. The University has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving this vital green space, with a renewed focus on creating a hub for environmental research, learning, and recreation.
“We are excited to move forward and ensure the Botanical Gardens serve not only as a tranquil escape but also as a center for advancing sustainability and environmental awareness,” a statement from the University said. The Legon Botanical Gardens will continue to welcome the community and foster environmental stewardship for generations to come.
