Diella TekuNana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, a seasoned farmer with five decades of agricultural experience, was honored as Ghana’s National Best Farmer at the Farmers Day celebration on November 8. At 70 years old, Nana Owusu has cultivated a legacy of innovation and resilience in farming, operating North American Farms in the Sekyere Central district of the Ashanti Region, where he employs 168 workers and grows a variety of crops, including cocoa and cashew.
Reflecting on his journey, Nana Owusu shared that his dedication to farming began 50 years ago with humble beginnings, evolving over the years into a large-scale operation that supports both local employment and agricultural productivity. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, he received a cash prize of one million Ghana cedis.
In his acceptance speech, Nana Owusu highlighted the importance of bolstering food security across the nation. He emphasized that while farming is vital to Ghana’s economy, increased support from policymakers and communities is essential to ensure sustainability and resilience in the face of global food challenges.
The Farmers Day celebration took place with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other dignitaries in attendance. This annual event acknowledges the hard work and economic impact of Ghana’s farmers, recognizing them as central figures in the nation’s development.
