The University Teachers Association of Ghana, UTAG, has “spat” in the face of the Labour Commission and the government that, for the first time in history, the members of the Association are ready to face the worst with the strike action.
The University teachers embarked on the strike action since a week ago in demands of better conditions of service. In a counter response to the strike action, the labour commission has sought a court injunction to put a stop to the strike but UTAG has adamant in that regard.
In an emerging news, the labour commission has consequently decided to take steps to cite the UTAG for contempt of court. In a response to this step by the labour commission, the secretary elect for the association, Professor Gyampo, has made a point-blank statement that the teachers are ever ready, for the first time in history as far back as he can remember, to go to jail if demands so but they are not ready to call off the strike any time soon until their demands are met.
If the labour commission could see to it that article 71 office holders will receive a whooping over 50% salary increase in addition to all their allowances, and go this line with us, then they should bag us all out to jail and replace us all with another set of teachers. We are ready for it”, Professor Gyampo hit back. He made these comments in phone interview on UTV’s Adekye
In a hard economic times like this, if the political leaders are ready to have a such a huge increments in the salary levels while the nation builder, the teacher, has been neglected then it calls for worry because the leaders do not have the future of the nation at heart.
As it is now, the strike action is still on course and intensified with no hope of being called off.
