Woman Dies of Kidney Failure After Husband Allegedly Misuses Donations Meant for Treatment

A tragic story has emerged of a woman, identified as Joyce, who passed away from kidney failure after her husband allegedly misappropriated funds raised for her treatment and instead sought spiritual intervention at a church. The incident was brought to public attention by social media user @TheSerahIbrahim on X (formerly Twitter).

In September, @TheSerahIbrahim had rallied support for Joyce, seeking donations for her urgent medical treatment. The funds were intended to cover the costs of dialysis and other necessary care. However, months later, the devastating news of Joyce’s death was announced, sparking outrage online.

According to @TheSerahIbrahim, Joyce’s husband took the donations, deposited the money into his personal account, and removed her from the hospital where she was receiving treatment. Instead of continuing with medical care, he reportedly brought her to a church where the pastor claimed she could be healed through prayers and traditional remedies like Agbo (herbal medicine).

@TheSerahIbrahim shared chilling details of the ordeal, including voice notes and phone conversations from Joyce, in which she expressed her worsening condition while her husband and the pastor insisted she was healed.

She wrote: “They took her from the hospital to a fcking church and were praying and giving her Agbo for a kidney problem. She literally said she was not okay and was getting worse while her husband and the pastor were claiming she had been healed and was getting better. Sadly, we lost Joyce today.”*

The incident has fueled widespread anger, with many demanding accountability for Joyce’s death. @TheSerahIbrahim called for stricter regulations, urging the Nigerian Police to hold pastors accountable for promoting unverified healing practices at the expense of proper medical care.

She concluded her post with a powerful statement:
“Enough is enough. The Nigerian Police needs to start arresting pastors. We lost her today .”
